Frequently Asked Questions
1. What do I do when my child will be absent from school?
Answer: Please call the school as soon as you can to inform us that we should not expect
your child in school today. It is also a good idea to let us know if your child has a
contagious disease, in case we need to inform other parents.
2. Am I allowed to drop in and observe during my child's session?
Answer: All parents are welcome to stay and observe while your child is in school.
Building Blocks Preschool open door policy ensures that parents questions or concerns
are always handled immediately.
3. Does my child need to be potty trained to enroll in the Preschool Program?
Answer: No, We will be working very closely with parents to establish a toileting routine
for your toddler/young pre-schooler. We feel consistency between home and center will
obtain the best results. We don’t look at toileting and hand washing routines as chores.
They are an important part of the child’s needs and provide all kinds of learning situations,
such as, waiting, self awareness, courtesy, responsibility, independence, cleanliness,
sensory awareness, following directions and sharing. It should be a pleasant leisurely
experience, rather than one in which the child is rushed and prodded. Potty training
usually begins around 2-3 years old.
4. What if my child needs to leave school early for a family emergency?
Answer: Please call the school to inform them that you will be picking up your child early.
This will allow the teachers to have your child prepared to go when you arrive.
5. Why do you send so much art home?
Young children love exploring art media: brush painting, creating collages, finger-painting,
etc. At this age they are more interested with the actual process than they are about how
the finished product will look. Much of your child's early art work may not look like
something to you. However, it will be your child's experimentation with form and colors.
So, when your child proudly shows you their work, compliment them on their effort,
appreciate the colors and discuss the process. Smocks are provided for all children to
wear during any painting experience. On occasion, a child will be very enthusiastic in the
use of paint, and some paint may get through the smock to the clothing.
6. Why do I have to send my child in play clothes?
Children are encouraged to wear play clothes so they can be comfortable during their
active school day and not have to worry about getting dirty. Safe play shoes are important.
Tennis shoes or shoes with heals make good running and climbing shoes. Jelly shoes,
sandals, slippery dress shoes and flip-flops do not fit securely on the foot and may be
dangerous. If children wear shoe boots in the winter, they need to wear a different pair of
shoes in the classroom for safety and comfort. Please label all outerwear and boots!
In case of an accident, we ask that you supply on the first day of school an extra set of
clothes for your child. Place the items in a plastic bag labeled with your child's name.
7. Are the teachers required to have any special training?
Answer: NAEYC (National Association of the Education of Early Childhood) and MI DHS
(Department of Human Services) require continuing training and education of employees
in order to maintain licensing. Additionally, all our teachers are trained in CPR and basic
first aid.

Answer: We encourage your visit prior to making a final decision. Please call Ms. Emily

Answer: Tuition is due on, or before, the Friday before the week served. The tuition
payment box is located in the kitchen.

prompt medical attention can be given and your child can return to school:
PINK EYE
It is an inflammation of the lining of the lids and eyeball. The eyelids become red and
swollen and there may be a watery or thick yellow discharge. An antibiotic ointment is
necessary from your physician. Exclusion from school is required until child has a note
from the doctor or condition is clear.
CHICKEN POX
The first symptoms appear 2-3 weeks after exposure to the disease. They are slight
fever, headache, loss of appetite and a rash which appears as small reddish spots over
